Establishment:

Krishi Vigyan Kendra was established on 16^th June 1993 at Mahanandi in the revenue division of Nandyal, Kurnool district. Later, it was shifted to Utukur village of Kadapa division in Y.S.R. district on 1^st April 2005. It is functioning under the administrative control of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad. The Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi finances totally to the centre through ANGRAU.

Land particulars:

KVK is having an area of 10.6 ha in the premises of ARS, Utukur, Kadapa for conducting On Farm Demonstrations to show the latest agriculture technologies and also imparting training to the farming community. There is one bore facility for irrigation purpose of crops of KVK farm.

Infrastructure facilities:

KVK is having administrative building cum training hall with well equipped multimedia training facilities, farmer’s hostel for stay of farmers during on campus training and staff quarters (06) for teaching and non teaching staff.

Description:

KVK is located at Utukur on Kadapa – Bangalore high way, which is 4 km away from district head quarters. Geographically, Y.S.R. district is situated with 30-43 and 15-14 of northern latitude and 79-29 and 79-55 of eastern longitude with an altitude of 259 – 379 meters above MSL. Based on the agro-climatic conditions the district falls both in the Southern rain fall southern and scarce rain fall zones. In Southern zone rain fall ranges from 700 to 800 mm covering 26 mandals, while it is 500-700 mm rain fall in scarce rain fall zone covering 25 mandals.

            There are 9 farming situations in the district. The natural boundaries are Kurnool on the North, Chittoor on the South, Ananthapur on the West and Nellore and Prakasam on the east. Y.S.R. district is said to be the heart of Rayalaseema and known to be one of the back ward districts, with uneven, isolated rain fall in different parts of the district and with large dry tracts. Recurring drought is the common phenomenon. The district is 15,359 square kms and is covered by three revenue divisions, 51 mandals, 834 grama panchayats, 958 revenue villages and 3706 hamlets.

             Major crops grown in Kharif are Paddy, Groundnut, Red gram, Cotton and in Rabi Bengal gram, Coriander, Gingelly and Sunflower. Other commercial crops grown are Banana, Sweet orange, Mango, Papaya, Chillies, Onion, Tomato, Chrysanthemum, Jasmine, Turmeric and Betel vine.
